Tips to Help You Audit Your Tech Stack in Preparation for 2021

November 19, 2020

We’re going to blink and it will be 2021. Now’s the time to buckle down and prepare for the new year. Of course you have to worry about the big things like your marketing campaign and bracing yourself for another COVID shutdown. But there’s always time to set aside for your technology stack; you need to make sure you’re using technology tools that help you operate more effectively and serve more clients. So don’t underestimate the power of pausing to take a long, hard look at your tech stack.

You might discover that your business has been using the wrong programs, too many programs that don’t collaborate well together, or too few programs that will make you slower and less efficient than your competitors. Your platform will never look exactly the same as your competitor’s or your friend’s, and that’s fine. The priority is auditing your tech stack often enough so you can create your own platform that perfectly suits you and your business’ needs.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of auditing your tech stack.

Focus on the Business Processes Connected to Each App

Instead of putting all your attention on the apps themselves, a great way to approach auditing tech stacks is to think about the business processes that are connected to each app. Don’t think about the raw number of apps. Think about whether an app meets multiple needs for you, how and when an app is used in your business process, how much it would cost to perhaps move to a new app or system, etc.

Thinking with this mindset helps you get a solid sense of your tech stack and how it’s serving you and your business. Find out how each app impacts employee efficiency, helps you with your daily tasks, and affects customer experience. If you don’t go through the trouble and create a proper tech stack architecture for yourself, there are several negative things that can happen to you in 2021: you may have several tools in your arsenal that just go completely ignored and unused, which can hold you back from growing at a desired pace; integration and implementation doesn’t run smoothly; a gap in your analytics feedback; etc. These are the last things you want to face as you try to grow your business in a new year!

Hone in on the business processes of your apps and you won’t have a problem keeping everything in order in the next year.

Create an Audit Schedule For the Future

The key to stay on top of your tech stack is to schedule regular audits on your calendar so you and your team can continue to refine your platform and use it to your advantage. This also allows you to construct a methodology for additions to your tech stack, like creating a phased, scalable plan for training and utilization, making a baseline of goals and metrics to manage your success, etc.

Remember to consider all the tools you use in your business. From marketing to service to sales, you want to make sure you know what’s being used, what’s proving to be useful, and what is holding you back. 2021 is likely going to be an unpredictable year, so it’s important to keep a close eye on your tech stack in order to be prepared for whatever is ahead (another lockdown, etc).

Get Your Team Involved

This shouldn’t be a process that you do entirely by yourself because you’re not the only one who will be using the platform. Bring in your closest team members to talk about the programs they’re using, let them share feedback, etc. You can also go over some business or marketing strategy that you want to implement in the future. This is a particularly good thing to do in preparation for 2021. You want to make sure you and your team are on the same page so you can start the year off strong.
